Background
In 2002, Sasquatch Books published a completely revised and updated edition of the Northwest Gardeners’ Resource Directory. In the hands of Debra Prinzing, the ninth edition carried on the legacy of Stephanie Feeney, the directory’s originator.

In late 2000, Stephanie died from terminal cancer, having passed on her brilliant ideas, hand-written notes, boxes of records and an extensive slide library to Debra – and having encouraged the Northwest Gardeners’ Resource Directory transition from Cedarcroft Press, the publishing company she owned with her husband Larry Feeney, to Sasquatch Books of Seattle. This generosity of spirit and love enabled her essential guide to live on and allow gardeners everywhere to use and enjoy it.

Serious Northwest gardeners know that this is the definitive sourcebook for anyone obsessed with gardening and all its pleasures. “As we sit here with hundreds of excellent nurseries and garden centers under our noses, it’s easy to take the Northwest gardening scene for granted,” I wrote in my introduction to the 9th edition. “However, as I have talked with each of the establishments featured in the NWGRD, one thing became certain: Everything you want or need in order to create the landscape of your dreams, grow the latest unique plant that’s seduced you, or improve your knowledge as a gardener is right here in our corner of the world.”

This edition features:

  • More than 300 nurseries in Washington, Oregon and western British Columbia – and beyond – including small, hard-to-find specialty “gems,” with addresses, driving directions, descriptions and web sites.
  • More than 200 gardening clubs and organizations that bring like-minded gardeners together and that can help you with particular plant and gardening questions.
  • Reviews of new and classic books, magazines, and journals.
  • Sources for seeds – from around the corner, across the state, and the other side of the world.
  • Special gardening services and products from arborists to ZooDoo.
  • Exhibits, plant sales, and gardens to visit.
  • Over 90% updated and new information from the last edition.

Praise for The Northwest Gardeners’ Resource Directory:
Fine Gardening: “…a model of what a regional guide should be.”
Sunset Magazine: “…an indispensable reference.”

The Next Chapter

Until there’s a confirmed plan to completely update the contents of the NWGRD and publish its 10th edition, I want to use my website to feature changes, updates and new information about Northwest nurseries, gardens, events and other resources with the gardening community. This free service will continue Stephanie’s passionate practice of sharing her wonderful discoveries with fellow gardeners. I hope my own passion and enthusiasm for “all things green” is contagious.
